A hungry elephant learns a lesson from a frog

Once there was a very hungry elephant. “I am very hungry,” he said to himself, and so he went along the forest path and came to a lovely bamboo palm standing in the swamp. Quickly, the elephant tore the palm down and saw that inside one of its leaves was a delicious looking bud. He popped the bud from the leaf, but as he did, the bud fell into the water.

Desperately, the hungry elephant searched for the beautiful bud. He hunted and hunted, but he could not find it because his efforts were causing such a commotion that the water was swirling and splashing about and into his eyes, blinding him from what he sought.

A frog sitting on a lily pad watched the young elephant struggle. “Quiet down, my friend,” he called out.

But the elephant was so engaged in his struggle he did not hear the wise voice of the frog.

“I say there, young whippersnapper, quiet down, and you will find what you seek.” But still the elephant could not hear the helpful voice.

Finally, the frog called out at the top of his voice, “Stop! Stop!”

This time the elephant heard the frog and he stopped thrashing about. Soon the waters calmed and cleared, giving the hungry elephant a perfect view of that which he sought.
