With this year’s exciting roster of big-money summer megahits, it’s no surprise that Americans flocked to movie sites in May.

Whether searching for show-times or reviews, purchasing movie tickets or buying DVDs, the Internet is playing an increasingly noteworthy role in the broadcast of movie information and monetisation of the industry.

With the summer movie season kicking off in May, ticket related sites had an increase in visitors. MovieTickets.com had a 55 percent increase in traffic and 5 million visitors and Fandango.com was up 50 percent with 7 million visitors. Retail movies category had a 7 percent increase to 27.6 million visitors, while social networking site Flixster.com saw its traffic rise 64 percent to 4.5 million visitors.

Political sites received a increase in traffic because of the presidential debates. Traffic to Politico.com increased 162 percent for the month to 648,000 visitors and MoveOn.org’s traffic rose 162 percent with 689,000 visitors.

For Mother’s Day the flowers, gifts and greetings category saw an 11 percent increase to 35.6 million visitors, the leader with a 365 percent surge was Trilegiant Corporation sites, which includes 1-800-Flowers.com, to 5 million visitors.

The top online sites for May were Yahoo Sites in the number one positions followed by Timer Warner, Google Sites, Microsoft Sites and Fox Interactive Med.
