Did you know I love baseball and have coached competitive baseball
for many years now? It’s a family affair, all 3 of my boys play, my
daughters keep the scorebooks, and rarely does anyone in our family
of 7 miss a game. As a matter of fact, we were all at the ball
fields late last night as our oldest, a freshman in high school and
starting on the varsity, was playing.
What kind of coach? I’m strict, firm, organized, respectful, and
crazy about the stats. We keep stats on everything and then use
that info as a guide when making lineup and batting decisions.
Using the stats as a guide has worked very well for my teams
winning championships.
When growing up and playing baseball myself, I did not have the
family support and participation as my boys now have. Moreover,
because my dad was not a coach nor apart of the good ole boy club,
I had to work harder than anyone else just to get average playing
time.
Using stats in coaching baseball, I am able to distinguish between
who looks pretty on the field and who is really producing the most.
Popularity, who’s your daddy, an opinion or voting among the fans
is all good for small talk but doesn’t do much for producing a
winning lineup.
Speaking of winning lineups and Internet business, we also use
stats here as a guide to making our advertising decisions, and for
all the same reasons as I use stats in coach baseball.
